In high school I volunteered at a non-profit organization in Portland, Maine for three years. They provide help to many immigrants and refugees in the Greater Portland Area. I tutored in the resource lab, which was open five nights a week for two hours at a time. I helped children, teenagers, and adults in all subject areas, including English, Math, Biology, US History, and Spanish. Most of the students were non-native English speakers, and therefore I not only had to teach them all of the concepts that they were learning, but I also had to teach them the English to learn the concepts!
I also tutored students in Spanish while in high school. I received a 5 on the Spanish AP test and I studied abroad for a semester in Granada, Spain.
I know that I can be a successful tutor because I have done it before and I have seen the results of my teaching. When I volunteered at a non-profit organization, I would start a session with a student who did not even understand the concept of algebra. After giving an overview on how letters represent numbers, and doing example problems, by the end of the session the student would be able to solve simple algebraic equations. I am a people person and am very outgoing, which is an important quality of someone who is working individually with students. I am patient and genuinely love helping people learn. I have gone to tutors in the past and they have helped me, so I want to do the same for other people. After teaching someone something new, I feel good about myself. For me this job is not only about making money, but rather putting my knowledge to good use!
