Private tutor in Miami, FL

Education

BA in Linguistics, Univeristy of Washington, Seattle 2006 (3.79 GPA) MS Special Education with a Bilingual Extension (Spanish), CUNY City College of New York, 2014 (3.81 GPA)

Experience

I have three years of experience teaching middle school special education math, science, social studies, and English, primarily to students with learning disabilities of varying degrees or some degree of ADD or ADHD. Limited experience with teaching life skills to middle school students with autism as well. I also have experience teaching math in Spanish to an 8th grade integrated algebra class. I moved to Miami this summer and am exploring opportunities to remain involved in education other than as a public school teacher. As I have always enjoyed working one on one with my students, tutoring is a good fit. I excel at developing positive relationships with my students, which enables me to determine their learning styles and help them make progress toward their academic, as well as social, goals.

Hobbies

I love reading classic literature, non-fiction, and children's literature. One reason I moved to Miami was to pursue my love of scuba diving and water sports (mostly crew). I have traveled fairly extensively through Central America, Europe, and the West Coast of the United States (where I am originally from). I speak Spanish (which I have studied extensively) and some Brazilian Portuguese, as I was an exchange student in Brazil as a teenager. I would say my personality with my students is a blend of goofy and no-nonsense, a key mix for middle schoolers. In addition, I emphasize critical thinking by making connections across curriculum and with real world application.
