Experience
Kaplan October 2010-August 2011 Premier Tutor: One-on-one personalized tutoring for the Critical Reading and Writing elements of various standardized exams. I taught Kaplan writing methods, focusing on creating strong, persuasive prompts and specific, related examples. I made learning grammar rules fun and easy! I guided students in constructing passage maps and predicting answers to reading comprehension questions. All tutoring was done in students’ homes, and instruction was crafted to individual learning styles and interests. I worked with students with disabilities and English language learners. I excelled in the forty-hour training program that provided necessary tutoring skills using the Socratic method which focuses on asking questions rather than providing answers. Champs Educational America: Summer 2008 Rhetoric and Writing Studies ~ San Diego State: Fall Semester 2007 New York City Teaching Fellows June 2012-June 2013 Special Education Collaborative Teacher in English, Writing and Social Studies at Baruch College Campus High School in Manhattan I collaborated with teachers and administration to develop units and lessons that were differentiated for diverse learning styles and readiness levels. I developed Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) that were aligned with Common Core standards and that included post-secondary goals for a caseload of fifteen students. I also facilitated small group discussion for students who struggled with traditional methods of instruction. August 2011-June 2012 Social Studies Teacher at the High School for Youth and Community Development in Flatbush, Brooklyn I taught high school students to write argumentative essays using textual evidence on social justice topics such as racism, sexism and classism. I utilized scaffolding strategies to support struggling readers and writers to break down challenging tasks and texts into smaller parts or steps. I incorporated music, film and visual arts to teach topics such as: lynching, apartheid, police brutality, witch hunts, femicide, suffrage movement, class consciousness, child labor during industrial revolution, imperialism and human trafficking. May 2011-August 2011 Field training at It Takes a Village Academy High School in Brooklyn I participated in an extensive training and gained experience in raising academic achievement for students with special needs in high-need public schools. During this field training I focused primarily on English Regents preparation. (The Regents are a series of standardized exams required to graduate from high school.) SAT test scores in 1999: 1470/1600 GRE scores 2012 for Verbal Reasoning 163 91% and for Writing 5.0 92%
